Cultivating Resilient Leadership: Part I – Nurturing the Power of Self-Awareness

Introduction

In my previous blog post titled “The Resilient Edge,” I introduced the foundational pillars of resilient leadership: self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-leadership. This post marks the beginning of a three-part series where we delve into each of these pillars in detail, starting with the cornerstone of developing self-awareness in leadership.

Unveiling The Simplicity of Growing One’s Self-Awareness

The development of Self-awareness is not something you have to learn.  It is much simpler than that.  It involves building a stronger relationship with the inherent awareness surrounding our experience. In this very moment, as you read these words, you are inherently aware. If you were not, you would not be able to comprehend what you are reading or integrate the concepts into your understanding. Thus, the journey to enhance self-awareness involves cultivating a deeper relationship with this innate awareness, which is abundant and already, always available to us. Ultimately, there is something always observing your thoughts and experience. This is the real you, who can view and hold every aspect of your experience. The ability to hold every aspect of your experience and meet all circumstances with clarity, energy, and confidence is essential to resilient leadership.

Guarding The Executive’s Most Precious Resource: Their Attention

One of the most valuable resources for an executive leader is their attention. This attention is an outward manifestation of their self-awareness. How effectively an executive uses their attention directly influences the quality of their focus. This, in turn, impacts key aspects of their leadership, including executive presence, the formulation of vision and priorities, decision-making prowess, the ability to foster alignment through daily conversations, and the adeptness in utilizing feedback to enhance both personal impact and team growth.

Strengthening Self-Awareness: Practical Approaches

The question that arises is: How can one systematically strengthen their self-awareness? Here are three practical avenues to explore:

  1. Meditation and Mindfulness: Engaging in the practices of meditation and mindfulness has shown remarkable benefits, not only in improving executive skills but also in enhancing overall well-being. These practices help refine the use of attention, thereby magnifying focus and self-awareness.  Moreover, every executive I have assisted in adopting these practices has not only witnessed improved stress management abilities but has also noted heightened attentiveness to their daily focus and engagement.
  2. Synergy with Self-Regulation and Self-Leadership: The second avenue involves synergizing self-awareness with the other pillars of resilient leadership – self-regulation and self-leadership. Enhancing self-awareness feeds into these aspects, creating a holistic growth trajectory.
  3. Embracing Feedback: The third potent way to amplify self-awareness is through regular feedback. Seeking input from diverse perspectives helps cultivate a well-rounded understanding of one’s leadership impact. Embracing constructive feedback fosters continual learning and growth.

Unlocking the Potential of Self-Awareness

In conclusion, self-awareness forms the bedrock upon which resilient leadership is built. By acknowledging the intrinsic awareness within us and honing our attention, we empower ourselves to sharpen our focus and lead more effectively. Through practices like meditation, the synergy with self-regulation and self-leadership, and the active pursuit of feedback, we not only unlock the potential within ourselves but also pave the way for holistic growth as transformative leaders. Stay tuned for the next installment in this series as we delve deeper into the world of self-regulation and its significance in resilient leadership.
